Welcome to our kitchen. I am Renee and my husband is Erik and to us, cooking is a way of life. It brings us together and slows down the pace of our otherwise busy lives. But most of all it creates fantastic memories because in our kitchen cooking is always about sharing the experience with family and friends.
Though Erik and I are often in the kitchen together, we each bring a different dynamic with our preference and style.
My passion in the kitchen is baking. Having an insatiable sweet tooth, I have always had the tendency to bake in my attempt to satisfy my cravings. This has led to an almost manic need to buy up every baking magazine that I pass in a grocery store check out aisle. My collection over the years now ranges in the hundreds as I, of course, can’t throw out a single magazine. My favorite things to bake include anything with chocolate, cream cheese, peanut butter and lemon. Being untrained professionally in the kitchen, all my baking skills have been acquired over many years of trial and error, and learning from the advice of others. Outside the kitchen, I am a high school history teacher and my hobbies include reading, exercising and spending as much time with my three energetic kids as possible. Of course, they also are developing a love of being in the kitchen as well.
Erik is the professionally trained chef in the family having attended culinary school in the northern suburbs of Chicago. He even interned at Rick Bayless’s famous Frontera Grill restaurant in Chicago for a year. Erik was on his way to becoming a full time chef when he made a detour into the business world about ten years ago and has been there ever since. He is now my own personal chef and I can’t say that I have any complaints about that. With his experience at the Mexican inspired Frontera Grill, and his own Spanish/Mexican family background on his mother’s side, he truly specializes in traditional Mexican dishes. He also has a passion for grilling and smoking and every weekend, all year long (even through these harsh Chicago winters!) it goes without saying that you will find Erik hard at work over the grill, cooking up some of his specialties. Yes I am a lucky gal!
Erik and I hope that our experiences will help inspire you to build your own kitchen memories. So crank up that oven, grab a mixing bowl and spatula, get your spices ready and above all find someone with whom to share your experiences, because cooking is always better when there are two (or more) in the kitchen.
